Annelise Meyer’s Freelance Ecosystem in Paris

What are you working on, and what do you love about it?

Initially a freelance translator, I have been working on the building of a coworking space for two years in an average-sized town located in the eastern outskirts of Paris, Champigny-sur-Marne.
It is not easy to run both my translation business and this project, but being a freelancer helps to divide my time between my “paid” job and the rest (connecting with all of the people we want to involve in the project, organising workshops and events, following training, etc.).
I love the freedom I have, though I am highly overworked and quite stressed right now!

Where do you interact with other freelancers in your industry or topic area?

I mostly interact with one other freelancer now, who happens to be my partner on this big project. Interacting with other freelancers and entrepreneurs in coworking spaces over the years is one of the reasons that led me to the idea of creating a coworking space in the first place.
Right now, the interactions with other freelancers are less frequent, because I had to give up on regular coworking so I could spare some money… but we have started a partnership with the municipality of Champigny so we can animate the small coworking space of the town every once in a while, and so we try and organise various activities ourselves or with other people once or twice a month.
The next session is to happen during the Freelancer week, this Friday :o)

What benefits have you and your business got from being in contact with other freelancers?

Being in touch with other people, working in different fields, has really helped me to keep my head clear over the years: it is not healthy staying on your own, especially when you do a job that is so lonesome as mine :o)
Over the years, being surrounded by other people who had chosen to follow their own path has allowed me to get and develop new ideas, and also given me the self-confidence I needed to bring them to life.
Now I also feel confident enough to help other freelancers to move on and grow their own business; this will be one of the main focuses of the future “L’Alternateur”!
What is the one thing that is missing where you live that would support your freelance career?
A shared friendly space!
There is no beautiful coffee place or even a library with a good wi-fi that I could use to work with peers in my town, which is another reason why I want to open a coworking space!
